Basic Science
There are 13 faculty members in the Department of Neural and Pain Sciences with a research focus in Neuroscience. Neuroscience track faculty participate in the Tri-Institutional Program in Neuroscience. Expertise spans from the levels of molecular and cellular biology to integrative neuroscience at the systems and behavioral levels. The single largest group are interested in the area of pain. Many members of the UMB Organized Research Center for the Study of Persistent Pain are faculty from the Department of Neural and Pain Sciences. Another focus of study is sensory-motor integration in the orofacial region. Research topics include neuroanatomical and electrophysiological studies of sensory-motor integration in the trigeminal system, and detailed studies of the oral apparatus’ dynamics during speech. The Vocal Tract Visualization Laboratory studies speech and swallowing motor control using imaging techniques such as MRI and Ultrasound. Other neuroscience research areas include the role of various neurochemicals in cerebral cortical development.
