The Department of Neural and Pain Sciences offers opportunities for research training at the graduate, postgraduate, junior and mid-career faculty levels as well as summer research training to college and dental students in the fields of neuroscience, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, molecular pathogenesis and infectious disease immunology. While maintaining a strong commitment to oral and craniofacial biological sciences, many of the research areas involve model systems that transcend classical oral biology, e.g.. studies of visceral pain, prostate cancer, sexually transmitted infections and soil bacteria.

College and dental students interested in a full-time research training experience for eight weeks each summer may pre-apply to the Summer Research Training Program.  Similarly, if you are interested in a career in academic dentistry where you will learn about the science underlying clinical practice and become capable of identifying and addressing significant problems in oral health, you may want to consider a combined DDS/PhD program.  Likewise, you may be attracted to a clinician-scientist program in the oral health arena, the University of Maryland Dental School is offering combined DDS/Masters programs designed to prepare outstanding students for the field of clinical research or public health.

If you are interested in one of our programs, please select the program and complete the appropriate Pre-Application. Thank you!
