Training Program in Oral and Craniofacial Biology
About the Program
The University of Maryland Dental School under the auspices of its NIH Training Program in Oral and Craniofacial Biology invites applications from graduate, dental, postdoctoral and combined DDS/PhD students, as well as junior and mid-career faculty, seeking new research initiatives. Over 50 mentors from the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, and the National Institutes of Health Intramural Programs are connected with the program. Clinical and basic research opportunities are available for advanced study in Hard Tissue and Neoplastic Disease, Infectious and Autoimmune Diseases, Oral and Craniofacial Chronic Sensory Disorders, and Oral and Craniofacial Motor Disorders. Primary emphasis will be placed on cross-disciplinary approaches, stressing the integration of basic, translational and clinical research in each student program.
Training Areas
Mentors focus their research on one or more areas:
- Hard Tissues and neoplastic diseases;
- Infectious and autoimmune diseases;
- Oral and craniofacial chronic sensory disorders;
- Oral and craniofacial motor disorders.

Financial Support
Stipends
National Research Service Awards provide stipends to trainees participating in the training program. For pre-doctoral trainees at all levels of experience, the stipend level currently awarded is $20,772 per year. For appointments of less than a year, the stipend will be based on a monthly proration.
For postdoctoral trainees, the current annual stipend is determined by the number of full years of relevant postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment. Relevant experience may include research experience (including industrial), teaching, internship, residency, clinical duties, or other time spent in full-time studies in a health-related field following the date of the qualifying doctoral degree. A trainee with a health-professional doctoral degree, who is enrolled in a graduate degree program, is considered to be in postdoctoral training and will receive the appropriate postdoctoral stipend listed above.
Training Categories
All applicants must be citizens of the United States or hold a currently valid I-551, Alien Registration Receipt Card.
